Spooky season

We’ve all seen the movies. The house lights start blinking, signaling a message from beyond.

Naturally, I was a little excited when it happened.

Then the power went out, but only in part of the house. And it did it again. And again. And again.

And, I was no longer excited.

We replaced the main breaker. But the problem persists.

So now we await the verdict if we are looking at a replacement of the 40 year old electric box and all the breakers.

Which means days without power.

On the bright side, the temperature isn’t supposed to be 100F today.

Until next time, stay healthy.

This month’s reading

Life is a little chaotic at the moment so I am only reading one book.

The Gunpowder Plot by Carola Dunn.

Happily it is set around a Guy Fawkes celebration which is perfect for spooky season.

Until next time.

The Colombo method

For the last 3 weeks, we have been moving my parents. The first weekend we rented a U-Haul and made two trips.

Then every weekend and a couple of times during the week, we made more trips to gather the rest of their belongings.

And just one more thing then one more thing.

Yesterday was the last trip and we are exhausted.

But now is the relatively easy bit of unpacking and selling what they no longer need.

Until next time, stay healthy.

Friday Fun Fact

The world might be a better place if swallowing pride burned 1000 calories.

When the wind blows

Things tend to move around. Not all things, of course, just small bit and bobs. The kind that attracts a dog’s attention.

Specifically our dog.

Which last night resembled a drunken swagger on a ship during a storm.

It was funny to watch the hubbinator being pulled hither and yon, but then there is the yelling as the dog tastes, chews, spits out or swallows whatever she caught.

It was a beautiful night for a walk.

Until next time, happy Fall.

Nothing like other people waking up to ruin your plans for the day.

Scammer-day

Well, Sunday was fun. I listed some stuff online to sell and boy did the scammers come out to play.

The first was an oldie but goodie–after offering to purchase my items they then wanted me to prove that I was a real person or for their safety or whatever reason and want me to send me a code back to them; This then gives them access to my email/phone for all sorts of mischief. Read here for more: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/scam-alert-prove-to-me-you-are-a-human-and-not-a-bot

I had about 5 of those and they were quite miffed when I said it was a scam.

But truly how does sending stuff back prove I am not a scammer or ensure their safety?

The second one was a bit more clever: He asked questions then realized he couldn’t pick up the item in person and wanted to send someone but wanted to pay for it in advance. I offered a little used email address linked with my seller’s account, then he’d claimed to have sent me money and I received a mysterious email saying I needed to pay extra to set up a special kind of business account and that he’d already lost money.

Thankfully, I watched Mark Rober on Youtube who exposed these kinds of scams before and I know where a real fund account email goes and what it looks like. FMI: https://www.itgovernance.co.uk/blog/5-ways-to-detect-a-phishing-email I chatted with the scammer for a bit then got bored and hung up.

I did report him to the social media platform from whence he sprang as a scammer, so we’ll see if he gets blocked and has to set up a new account.

In the end, it was a very exciting day.

Until next time, stay safe both on- and off-line.

Bottles of beer

You know the game right? You start with 100 bottles of beer, then you take one…and then the count down begins.

Why am I talking about beer?

Because for the last 20 years we’ve had the same internet provider and the same email address.

Which means I have 20 years of emails to sort through.

Or in terms of actual numbers that’s 4451 emails. Ya, apparently I hoard electronic mail.

Let the countdown begin.

Fan-ta-shoot

It started with the ceiling fan light. You see, the light wouldn’t turn on when the remote was pushed. And the fan speed remained stubbornly the same.

We replaced the battery. Then all the lightbulbs.

And no luck.

Then a funny thing happened. While on a zoom call, number one son pushed the remote button and the fan in the dining room responded. Lights. Speed. Off and on.

Unbelievable. We checked the settings, but they were different on the remotes.

So we dismantled the fan looking for the receiver and synced the remote and the receiver. Still nothing. Oh bother, looks like we are getting a new fan.

Until next time.
