I’m not sure if I have a defective imagination or not, but I do know that it doesn’t come with an off-switch. You see, we have a new neighbor. Not someone I’d talk to because they’re close by, but across the park from us.
I notice them for several reasons—they keep their yard and house neat but don’t display anything personal, they are renting, their light is on at 5 AM in case the coyotes decide to take a bite out of me, and mostly because every couple of weeks, they have a moving van in front of their house.
I don’t see anyone moving in or out. I have never seen the van open, it’s always closed. Sometimes there’s a trailer attached to it, other times no trailer.
I’ve imagined all sorts of reasons why they have this trailer in front of their house. Not many of them are good.
But I’ve finally decided that they’re smugglers, probably coyotes themselves (of the human persuasion) moving people from Phoenix to other places. I’ve rapped on the trailer, while the dog obligingly peed on the wheels. No one answered,
But would they?
Which was worse? Life in the trailer (a known) or life outside it (an unknown)?
Am I letting my imagination get carried away? Or am I right in thinking, these people are trying too hard not to draw attention to themselves?
At least, I know what my characters are up to. Kinda. Okay, I know what they’re doing after I write the scene:D
Be careful snooping around. You might be abducted and sold as a sex slave. Or it could go worse if they find out you write romance and sci-fi novels.
Call cops I had same neighbors and they had 22 people smuggled in the house. That ain’t right
Pegitha in this day and age they are called assisted immigrates, they are not “smuggled”. If in fact they are being “smuggled” someone is taking away somebody’s job at DHS.
