Fair Food

After working for 3 weekends straight, we decided a little break was in order and headed toward the State Fair. There weren’t as many people there as in past years and the exhibits and food were a little thin, but we always enjoy ourselves.

Our normal starting point was the fine art exhibits inside the coliseum. Lots of paintings, sculptures, and photos. Of course, I have a fondness for all the quilts and there was an awesome display of them–including several Halloween quilts that I wanted to take home.

The 4-H displays were awesome and the school artwork was inspiring (and humbling since some of those 1st graders are better artists than I am).

The food displays made me wish they still sold recipe books of the winners.

And speaking of food, we did have big hopes for the fried food offerings.

And started with our usual fried bread with beans and cheese.

We then moved onto a new treat–a watermelon taco. A watermelon shell filled with pineapple soft serve ice cream and topped with a spice. It was salty and sweet and very delicious.

It was also very filling, even splitting it between the two of us, so this finished our food adventure and kept us going until dinner.

As we continued to explore the exhibitor’s booths and stopped by the farm animals and petty zoo, we noticed a theme — dinosaurs followed us everywhere and we kinda wondered if they weren’t fattening us up for a late afternoon snack.

Thankfully, we made it out alive and had a great time. Until next time, stay healthy.
