Is it just me?

My friend and coworker came back after having a week off at Thanksgiving. She’s decided to be positive, and see the bright side of things. I lasted about five minutes.

Then I got to thinking, maybe it’s me that’s causing the negativity.

So I replayed our conversation. All I can say is I definitely contributed by asking questions.

Then I got to thinking. I saw a facebook post about turning off the TV and talk radio to cut out the negativity in our lives.

But then this post came across my Facebook feed about how little some of the most well known charties actually spend on the programs they tell us they are funding.

Maybe I should cut out Facebook, too.

But there’s some funny stuff there. Stuff I like to repost because it is absurd, or because it shines a light of hypocrisy on the propagand campaigns of special interest groups.

Then a friend of mine commented that she hadn’t heard about the Paris bombings for a week because she’d isolated herself.

So, I’ve struck a bargain with myself. I’ll keep skimming the news feeds but skip the news and talk radio (okay, I don’t listen to them anyway), but for everything bad I hear/read, I’ll search for 5 good news/funny/or absurb items. I’m positive I can do that:D

Until next time!

Did you know?

I learned an interesting factoid that I thought I’d pass on. You know those annoying little captcha that you have to fill out to prove that you aren’t a robot?

Well, it seems those buggers are doing more than just annoying the snot out of people. Those double word recaptchas are helping to translate digitalized books.

You read that right.

You see most of the words that are scanned from a print book end up being nonsense words, so the designers of captcha decided to use the collective human need for social interaction to help translate those untranslatable words.

But there’s a catch. Since the computer doesn’t know what the scanned word is supposed to say, it must include a word that it does understand. So one word is the test and the other words helps to translate books.

Pretty cool, huh?

Okay, maybe I’m still going to be annoyed at those prove you’re not a robot tests, but at least I can try to remember that I’m helping to translate books.

And I love books.

Until next time.

The Kindness Before the Storm—Talking to Strangers

I was out and about doing the normal frantic errands this weekend, wearing my ‘High Functioning Sociopath’ Sherlock shirt when a weird thing happened. People were talking to me.

Hello? Don’t you know how to read my shirt?

Apparently I was their kind of crazy. I get it. It happened in Costco where a guy invited himself to Biscuits and gravy for Sunday breakfast. I don’t know if he was going to bring his wife, but hey he wanted to come. Sure, it was fun to chat while standing in line to get out the door. If it wasn’t for that whole, I’m not a people person thing, it would have been great. But I’ve done it before. There was the guy with bacon wrapped steaks. Lots of ’em. Bread and cheese too. I told him I’d bring the salad.

Then there was the woman in Frys. She had the kind of poofy hair you see in sixties sitcoms or New Jersey. We chatted by the deli counter waiting for ham. Who knew I had my talk to me sign on.

then there was the helpful lady at Michael’s who was kind enough to tell me the store was closed. It actually was open but she was trying to enter through the exit door. She followed me inside after a laugh at how we all do that, we parted company.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not a people person, but I will look back and remember fondly the shared humanity when Friday hits and everyone is on their bitched behavior.

Until next time.

They were pure fantasy on wheels, machines designed to make the heart race and the mind ask,
“What if?”

1956 BUICK CENTURION II

1954 FORD LA TOSCA

1951 BUICK LeSABRE

1959 GM FIREBIRD III

1955 LINCOLN FUTURA

1958 FORD X-2000

1953 CADILLAC GHIA COUPE

This car was never shown to the public.

1952 CHRYSLER D’ELEGANCE

1954 DE SOTO ADVENTURER II

1953 FORD X-100

1956 PACKARD PREDICTOR

1956 OLDSMOBILE GOLDEN ROCKET

Wow, too bad none of these went into production…………….

Seasoned to Perfection

Some time ago I wrote about being stalked in the park by coyotes. It is usually just me and my dog at an early hour, and I guess we look like a nice meal on their way to the horse property nearby, or instead of the stray cats, pigeons, and happy dogs.

I was advised to purchase some bear spray since these urbanized coyotes will rush me and my dog and surround us in true pack style. FYI, my dog is a rottweiler-German shepherd mix and weighs about 100 lbs. I have tried yelling and stomping and making lots of noise, but the coyotes don’t give up easily.

Hence the bear spray.

It was endorsed by the Alaskan Wildlife folks who I trusted knew their stuff.

And so over the year, I’ve pulled the spray can out a few times but haven’t actually used it.

Until a few days ago when the can slid out of the bag and sprayed just a bit as I bent over to unleash my dog.

He was fine.

I was nearly blinded by tears and coughing and wheezing. Holy mackerel that stuff was powerful.

But it didn’t work on the dog and now I don’t know if it’ll work on the coyotes. Makes me think that when I spray it, I’ll just be seasoning myself for them to devour:D

Until next time.

The Gift

Last Tuesday, I received a gift of Tibetan Prayer beads as a thank you for judging our writing group’s contest.

IMG_0246

To be honest, I was hoping they would contain the bad thoughts that bubble up inside me and bring me inner peace. Apparently, I have to work for those things. Still, each of the beads mean something different, and inner peace is one of the attributes of the beads.

After the bombings in Pakistan, Beirut, and Paris over the weekend, I’ve come up with a new use. I’ll count my blessings and use the red and black beads to pray that others in this areas are able to do the same.

I do not have it in me to be a pacifist, but I am a human being capable of empathy and I chose to exercise that ability.

Friday Feel Good

Since Veteran’s Day just passed I thought I’d share this story.

FOCUS      ON THE MAN IN THE FIRST PICTURE. IT’S HIM THROUGHOUT THE SERIES OF PHOTOS SHOWN BELOW.
w
If he is a hero………..She is an angel                    .
PLEASE DO NOT HOLD ON TO THIS OR PRESS DELETE. SOMEONE HAS TO
HOLD OUR COUNTRY IN THEIR HANDS.
SEND
THIS ON, AND ON AND ON.
If you care to offer the smallest token of recognition and
appreciation for Our military, please pass this on and pray for Our men and
women who have served and are currently serving Our country.
And pray for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for
freedom.

Welcome Back, Vets. I hope you make it home.

Untitled attachment 00031Some years ago, the US military released a horrible statistic. More Afghan/Iraq vets were dying from suicide than were killed in battle. God only knew how many others were homeless, locked in the war that raged inside their heads.

It was a sad reminder that although our loved ones come back to us, they don’t always make it all the way home.

Their service has changed them.

And their families.

My dad married just before he left the Marine Corps. He is proud of his service and wears his Korean War vet ball cap with pride. But just because he was discharged, didn’t mean he was free of  the military.  Here’s my dad sharing his thoughts:

mime-attachment-34

On this day in 1953 about this time of day, I was getting off a cattle car in South Caroline and being herded to a bus with screamed instructions and insults to enjoy my first day in the corps of “The Few and the Proud”. It was an abrupt introduction after a somewhat sheltered life up to that point. You can not imagine the fear and helplessness of be held captive and being abused verbally and sometimes physically without the ability to fight back. If you wrote home or to your congressman it would only get worse as some found out. There was no higher authority to appeal to and if you tried to fight back it was the brig (Jail) or bad conduct discharge the likely result. There plan was to remove the child from the teens or young men before them by breaking down the individual for the benefit of team building. A horrible ten weeks but I no longer have nightmares in the last two or three decades. Soon after my time the infamous McKeon swamp march which killed a handful of recruits forced a change to a softer form, of “Boot Camp”

Yesterday ,l celebrated my release from the Marines, it was my 58th anniversary. October is special to me in many ways. On Saturday, I was happy to see two of my favorite celebrities shared a birthday, Freddy Couples (golfer) and KebMo (Singer. Meanwhile, remember to fly your flags and remember the vets on November 11th because even if they did not have to be in a war, they still made sacrifices and suffered to keep you safe.

Dad1955USMC

I wasn’t around for the first 10 years of my parents marriage. But I know it was contentious. That my parents argued and my dad who’d been trained to kill had to leave for a while to cool down.

It took him a while to come home, but he made it.

And he wasn’t alone.

My great uncle survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. More great uncles served in World War II; other uncles served in Vietnam and Korea. Cousins and friends were in Grenada, Desert Storm, and Enduring Freedom.

They all came back; not all made it home.

The members of your unit may have kept you alive in the sand box. But your discharge doesn’t free you from needing others to have your back. Find a new unit from the veteran’s support group, depend on them to get you the last mile home home.

One last thought from my father:

My memories of the sad view of Arlington with the horse drawn cassions delivering yet another vet to their final resting place that I saw six days a week for a year and a half are still embedded.

Don’t let the war take anymore lives. You fought for our homes. Keep fighting, but not for us.

Let others help you make it home.

For Those With A Sweet Tooth

This year the Arizona State Fair had an exhibition on candy. Here are some of my favorite photos.

From the beginning:

After the walk through on the ingredients, we explored the types of candy. I had to take a picture of this because Big Hunks are one of my favorite candies.

This is considered one of the first junk foods:

Then there was the jelly-bean art:

Now for my two favorite signs.
