When is snot an opportunity?

As many of you know, I’m recovering from a head cold. Recovering being the term to use when you need to learn to breathe again usually one clear nostril at a time. Then there’s the matter of sounding and wheezing like a ninety-year old man who chain smoked all his life.

Recovery always takes longer than the actual illness.

And despite the fatigue dogging my steps, I have a pathological need to erase this virus from my house.

Some might say this is natural. Sickness has an odor—whether we smell it with our noses or our brains. And I want it gone. Perfectly natural to kill the thing that made me so miserable.

Or maybe the problem goes deeper than that.

When I was younger and stayed home from school on account of not feeling well, my mother often had me scrub the house. Sweating the sickness out of me, I believe it was called.

It worked.

And no, it never stopped me from taking the occasional “cough, cough, wink, wink” sick day. So now I’m staring at the walls thinking, I could probably wipe them down with bleach and wash all the curtains and kill every bug in sight.

Is it just me? Or does anyone else have a need to spring clean at the end of an illness?

On One Hand

We’ve been dog sitting my parents’ dog for the last week. You would think that adding a very small dog to the walking patterns of our very large dog would not be a problem. After all I do have two hands, perfect for holding two leashes.

Except, it’s not. It’s more like I have two hands, each possessed by a different demon, with different agendas.

Thankfully, our dog is old and moves slower than he did as a pup. So the pace isn’t a problem.

It’s the sniffing. One dog stops, the other keeps going. And trying to drag the other one back to pick up the first one’s mess is apparently violating some doggie rights. Walks take place only in one direction. There is no backtracking.

I image that a small dog could easily be guided in another direction. Nope. It’s like a small, wiggly anchor at the end of a leash. Sure, she looks cute, but she’s stubborn.

There are moments of cooperation—such as when one finds a perfect spot to pee and the other must follow. But usually, they take turns heading in opposite directions then swinging around to see how quickly I can untangle myself from the leashes.

Ah, well, I’m getting better at it, just in time for my folks to pick up their dog and for me to forget again. In the meantime, I’ll ogle those multiple leash holders at Petsmart. If anyone uses one let me know if they’re worth the investment.

Until next time.

We Interrupt This Blog

One of the things I look forward to during the summer is no colds. And yet, here the weather turns 108 F and I start spiking a fever of 101.5. To make matters worse it’s a head cold.

Which makes doing anything harder if not impossible. Who knew you needed a functioning brain to do so many things.

So today I will spend the day dragging my blanket and pillow from the couch to the bed and back again as I drink hot and cold beverages, build a fortress of used tissue, and try to cough up a lung. And think about how diabolical it would be for an alien race to infect us all with colds then invade while we’re too miserable to care:D

Hope to be on the mend for Wednesday’s blog.

Until then, I have a mug of peppermint tea and honey with my name on it.

More Phoenix Comicon Pictures

Here are some more of the awesome photos from Phoenix Comicon, featuring darker characters. T-Rex fit right in add in the fact that many of the Jurassic Park security was just wandering around made it all the more laughable. There were quite a few Mary Poppins, no doubt due to the presence of Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke. Thankfully the alien didn’t spit acid, and the creepy kid in the facemark has finally found his Mummy. Enjoy!

Happy Memorial Day

Today in the US, it is Memorial Day. While many will get lost in the pursuit of a good sale and the best bbq ever, take a moment today to remember those who died for freedom. To see the estimated numbers, visit here.

To read some poetry about previous wars, visit here.

At Phoenix Comicon Through the Weekend

Happy Friday everyone! I’m at Phoenix Comicon today signing my books and character watching with Vijaya Schartz. We never even heard a thing about the armed man the police arrested until long after the incident. So thank you to Security and the police.

And we will continue to have fun. I even have my minions to help.

What I Thought I Knew

I was quite hopeful that I would have most of my book done this weekend. It is the second time writing the thing, and since I started last summer, it is the longest I’ve taken to finish a book since I started writing nearly 20 years ago.

I find myself frustrated that I’m still writing the book. I want to put it away and work on something new.

But I know myself. I am linear. I finish what I start and move on. Always going forward.

Each book teaches something. Sometimes I don’t want to learn those things.

Or maybe I don’t want the Syn-Ens to end. You would think as a writer I can choose to continue to write the series. But this book is where the story fairy packs up her magic dust and sprinkles it on another field of imagination. Sure, there may be a spin off of the children and the frayed threads left behind the Meek being reborn.

But it won’t be this year. Probably not even next.

In the meantime, I blocked out the rest of the book. I thought I had 9 chapters to go.

Turns out there are 11 left, which means probably 15 or so to go. This after already writing 32 and about 85K words. Before the end of the month. That’s my new and improved deadline. Smashed in there with 4 days of Phoenix Comicon starting on Thursday. I will do it. I need to move on. I need to say goodbye.

Wish me luck.

What do you (re)make of that?

I’m certain there’s no shortage of creativity in Hollywood and other places where movies are made. So why are there constant remakes of old movies and franchises? I’m sure it has to do with money. Remaking movies that made money is the closest to a sure thing as studios can get.

And frustrating to those of us who would prefer new content, or are so wedded to the classic/original that the new version doesn’t stand a chance.

I do love the new reboot of Star Trek. Maybe in part because it isn’t going over new ground, but shifted to a new time stream, a new take on adventures, allowing our favorite characters to return.

I’ll even admit that the live version of Beauty and the Beast is just different enough to be as good as the original. And I love the original.

But then I saw Anne with an E on netflix and I broke into a cold sweat. Anne of Green Gables is a favorite from my childhood. Megan Follows will always be Anne, Colleen Dewhurst will always be Marilla, and Richard Farnsworth will always be Matthew. Even when I read or reread the book, these are the people I picture. The characters that I love so much and visited again in all the sequels.

But then it was remade. Not once, but twice last year. I have the Netflix version in my list and hope it makes me love the characters all over again.

Anyone else enjoy a remake as much as the original?

Are You Listening?

Lately, I’ve been accumulating podcasts. Podcasts on gardening and writing. In other words, things I find interesting and useful.

Trouble is, I haven’t be actually listening to them.

In part, it’s because my truck doesn’t have Bluetooth so I can listen to them through the speakers.

But that’s just an excuse. I could listen at work. I don’t get reception for the stations I like, so this would be prime time to hear the podcasts.

And still…. no.

I love music. I bring my ipad to work to hear my music and I even have a little speaker to broadcast through. Maybe I’m having trouble making hte shift because I hate talk radio. Maybe I’m not willing to sacrifice my music. Maybe, it’s just me:D

So for those who listen to podcasts or audiobooks, how did you make the transition?
